This portrait of Opera San Jose founder Irene Dalis is in the California Theatre Market Street Lobby. It was painted to mark the occasion of her first performance in an opera. She is pictured as Princess Eboli in Verdi's Don Carlo, her professional debut role. The painting was made from a photo taken at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater in 1953; Robert C. Rishell, who also painted the official portrait of Governor Ronald Reagan, painted the portrait that same year. This is the second time that this portrait has been in the California Theatre: it was on the set of OSJ's 2016 Barber of Seville (scroll down this page). |
